Residential Navigation Courses
For those
wishing to gain a recognised award in navigation we offer a two day
residential course in hill navigation based on the syllabus of
National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS). The training is
intended to enhance the enjoyment of your walking by developing
sound navigation practice, including route planning. A maximum
assessment ratio of 1:6 ensures that you get the best out of the
training.
Our
residential courses are based at Pennant Uchaf pictured
above. The lodge is in North Wales, at the northern end of the
Clwydian Hills. This area is a walker’s paradise, and the
outdoor training starts right at the front door!
A typical training weekend could look something like
this :– - Friday evening: short indoor session on understanding
the map, using map symbols, grid references, etc. - Saturday:
outdoor training using map and compass, in the beautiful setting of
the Clwydian Hills. Packed lunch will be taken during the day,
and we return to the lodge in time for tea. After tea a short
indoor session on route planning - Sunday: continuation and
development of Saturday’s training, with assessment for those who
wish to gain the appropriate NNAS award. Return to the lodge
for early tea, Award presentation and further training advice,
before late afternoon departure.
This is a
2-day training and assessment programme with self-catering, twin
bedded accommodation included in the price. Welcome packs or
other food needs can be provided at extra cost on request. A
supplement is payable for single occupancy of rooms. Maps and
compasses can be provided free of charge for the duration of the
course.
Pennant
Uchaf is a well-appointed lodge in the Clwydian Hills, not far from
the Offa’s Dyke path. The lodge is in a lovely setting with
views across to Orme head and, weather permitting, Snowdon.
The twin rooms are comfortable and welcoming, the communal space is
ideal for indoor training and socialising, and the guests’ kitchen
is well equipped. For those wishing to eat out, St Asaph is a
short drive away, with a wide choice of eateries. We do
not always have total occupancy of the lodge, but when we share it
is with fellow outdoor types, including horse riders and
walkers.
Although
our planned courses are at weekends, we may be able to provide
mid-week courses on request.
